It's Here!

Two days ago a package came in the mail. I had high anticipation of what it was. Of course it was the Rosetta Stone I ordered! I set the package off to the side for awhile as I was involved in doing something else when it arrived.

By the time I finally got to the package and really looked at it I found out it was not the Rosetta Stone package. I was surprised how that affected me. My heart sunk. The package was actually beads I had ordered for a class I will be taking later this month through Skype. You would have thought I would have been excited all over again, right? But strangely I wasn't.

I feel I need every bit of time I can to learn some Swedish if I am going to make a trip to Sweden later this year. I already feel the pressure because one week this month has already disappeared with nothing accomplished in that regard.

Fortunately, I did receive the Rosetta Stone package the following day! Again I was immersed in other things so it took me a couple days this time to open and explore this package. I was not so impressed. I didn't find any real instructions with the program, on the box or inside the box.

Yesterday while I was waiting for my hubby, we planned to go to the gym together, I decided to open and explore the package more closely. I tried downloading the program probably four times before I realized no matter what I did it wasn't going to work. I thought I was missing something. So frustrating.

My husband told me to call the company, but I decided to try the online help first. Well, the help was great, it took some time, but I was taken care of and pleased with the help. I apparently needed a link of some sort to add to the program, almost seemed like an update, but it wasn't because I would get the update link already. I am thinking it was an activating link. I just wish there were instructions to let you know you needed help to make the darn thing work. Had I known it was going to activate the actual contact with someone speaking Swedish I would have waited with that part, but to late now. Next time I will be more aware and understand how this works!

Needless to say, I never went to the gym. I was very frustrated and probably spent a good 3-4 hours getting the darn thing set up! One thing I wish I understood ahead of time was that they activated me for three months with the live communication in Swedish. I have three months, that is all unless I pay more money and I have no idea how much that would be.

So I feel the pressure. I need to immerse myself in this program. I certainly hope these lessons aren't as difficult as setting the program up was...

Thanks for stopping by!

Wishing you success in all of your genealogical treasure hunts!

  2. I too ordered Rosetta Stone, only in German, right after my mom passed away. I wanted so bad to learn German and be able to talk to my family in Germany, that I decided the best way was "Rosetta Stone" . . . because of all the things I had going on with my mom's estate, I didn't open my box up for close to a year! Yes, a year! The time just got away from me and my head was in a different place.

Once I did finally open it up, I went through the same frustrating process as you did. I didn't get online help, I called and they finally got me set up. I too had to do the "activation link" thingy. I wasn't happy with that part of the process either. I had spent so much time trying to set it up myself.

Once it was set up, I did start the learning process but soon, daily life took over again and I was going through more legal issues (as you know) with my mom's estate, so once again, I didn't have the time.

I very much want to get back to learning German and hopefully 2013 will be the year! Good luck Cheryl . . . I hope you learn lots of Swedish and the program works for you!

    1. I know it can be really tough, but I think it's easier if you can use some different words every day and try to get them to be your ordinary daily words ...Well, I say this, I who do not can manage english right..;) :)
You can write whenever you want, if you have any questions, or so, I'll try to answer;)! Good luck! Lycka till!

    3. Hej!
Jättekul om du lär dej prata svenska, det kommer du få glädje av. :-)
Jag är ingen mästare på engelska, men tillsammans klarar vi oss säkert
ganska långt med "svengelska". Så, ingen panik. ;-)

  5. I've had Rosetta Stone for a while now. I'm learning Italian and really enjoy the way they teach it. My roommate tried the Russian version and didn't like it. She would rather learn phrases right off the bat instead of single words. I hope you enjoy it and can learn everything you'll need to know. If for some reason you don't like it, the company my roommate uses is Pimsleur. Might be something to check out.

  7. My husband wants to get Rosetta Stone. I'm really glad you shared your experiences (everyone in the comments, too!). I wanted to learn Portuguese and checked out the Pimsleur program from my library. I liked it a lot, especially because when life got in the way I didn't stress because it was free!
    Thanks a bunch!

    1. Hi Betsy! I took my first lesson on Rosetta Stone and actually loved it! I am going to do it a few more times before I move to the next lesson. It is just to bad it started off as it did. The good news is though, I love how they teach, different words and combining them two words at a time. You repeat and learn how to read the words as well as say them. You use a microphone headset, so you are marked by how you respond. It is pretty interesting. Once you purchase the program it is always yours. I had the Berlitz years ago for Spanish and never cared much for it, it was conversational, not like this is, actually learning the language, not phrases.
