Jamboree 2010 ~ Fun Friday ~ Post # 2

I spent part of Friday morning in the "Bloggers Lounge" where I was able to visit and take a few more pictures. There were many free Jamboree events that morning until noon... round table discussions, an introduction to genealogy class, an advanced class and more. At noon the exhibit hall opened. Jamboree Orientation commenced promptly at 1:00p.m. and lectures started at 1:30.

Somewhere between all of this and breakfast Gini Webb, from Ginisology, and I went to the Ancestry scanning room to make an appointment to have our documents and pictures scanned. I brought all over sized items that I couldn't scan at home. Originally I read we were allowed to bring 50 items, to be done in a 15 minute session. As time closed in on the actual event, I read we could bring 25 items. Difficult as it was, I chose 25 and then chose another 25 (most with multiple pages) just in case there was time to do more.

One option we had when we arrived there was to leave the items in a tagged box and come back later for everything. At first I was a little hesitant about that, but in the end I really didn't want to waste time watching people scan, so I laid all of my items in the box, took the tag for pick up and went on my way wondering how many pages would actually get scanned and placed on the Ancestry thumb drive. To my surprise when I returned home and actually looked at the thumb drive, they had scanned every item, a total of 143 scans! I had NO idea there were that many pages, let alone ever expecting every page to get scanned. I was truly impressed, surprised and thrilled!

Megan Smolenyak Smolenyak

One of the highlights of my afternoon was Megan Smolenyak Smolenyak signing my book "Who Do You Think You Are?" I have to say, Megan looks as great in person as she does on TV and in her photos. It was such an honor to meet her! Thank you Megan!

Oh, and then there were lectures also! I almost forgot those. I did take two of them on Friday. The first was "What You Must Know To Save Your Research from Destruction." This lecture was given by Lisa Louise Cooke, of Genealogy Gems fame, and was very informative. The second lecture I attended was "Identifying and Dating Family Photographs." Maureen Taylor, The Photo Detective, gave this lecture. I don't think I could ever tire listening to her lectures, but when will I ever remember to bring my books, that she has authored, to have her autograph them? I never seem to remember. Maybe next time.

Thanks for stopping by!

Wishing you success in all of your genealogical treasure hunts!

  1. That's a lot of scanning. Glad you were able to get it done at the conference.
