Conference of California Historical Societies

I have been a member of my local genealogy society for 6 years. Because I am so busy all of the time I hadn't been very active with the group until a couple of years ago.

That was when I received a phone call asking if I would consider being a board member. The rest is history. I am still a board member and I am grateful my job this year is more manageable for me than the one I had last year. If it weren't for the phone call, I am not sure I would be active yet with the society. I do what my job entails and try to help out more when and where I can, but still, my time is always so limited.

Last month one of our society members was awarded a very prestigious, individual award. This award is a state wide award which was presented to him at the annual meeting of the "Conference of California Historical Societies."

George Anderson was awarded for helping "to nurture and preserve our priceless heritage."

George has been a member of our society for many years, maybe dating back close to when the society first started. He has always impressed me with his knowledge.

The evening of our board meeting last month George brought his binder which must have included almost everything he has helped with, participated in and even developed. I think I missed most of the meeting that night reading it. I would have been happy to have brought it home with me overnight so I could get the full depth of everything in that binder!

There always seem to be a project of some sort within most genealogy societies that could use assistance. Last year I added to my duties managing a group from within the society to index the 1940 census. What a great project that was!

This year, I am currently waiting to hear more about the project I recently offered to help with. As soon as I have my instructions I will share more about that.

Being so impressed with George's volunteerism over the years, I found a whole new energy and desire to volunteer more. I was actually amazed by the feeling that swept over me at the time. If he could do all that he had, I certainly could do a tiny fraction of that! Now, if I only can find more hours in a day...

Congratulations and thank you George for all of your energy, knowledge and dedication! We are so very proud of you! You are truly are an inspiration!

Do you volunteer with your genealogy society in any way? I would love to hear about what you do!

Thanks for stopping by!

Wishing you success in all of your genealogical treasure hunts!
