Tombstone Tuesday ~ Heredia, Costa Rica

Heredia Cemetery. Date April 30, 2008. Location Heredia, Costa Rica, Central America. Digital Image. Privately held by Msteri, [ADDRESS FOR PRIVATE USE] California. 2008

This is a view of the only cemetery located in Heredia, Costa Rica. I was amazed to see all of the burial sites elevated on top of the ground. I am used to seeing headstones and the burials under ground, although I remember when we were back in Pennsylvania we saw graves elevated same as these. This Californian had her eyes opened in the last year with cemeteries.

The graves are all nicely finished, some in cement and many with tile. Some are plain and some are rather elaborate. Many have several family members in one plot. My family spent a bit of time there, but this genealogist would have loved to spend more time there than we actually did. I was fortunate to even get to the cemetery as my family just doesn't see the "vacation" in doing this. Some of the family didn't even come along.

The entrance to this cemetery does not have a name attached to it, although I know it is the only cemetery located here. There is not an office located on the site either.

All over the country I remember seeing cemeteries such as this one. Six months prior when we were in Pennsylvania, I was so amazed at seeing plots elevated above ground, that I actually had a tour bus stop for me so I could take a picture. Then in Costa Rica, they were all this way.

My spouse has family buried in this cemetery, look for future posts elaborating on them.

Thanks for stopping by!

Wishing you success in all of your genealogical treasure hunts!

Msteri
